Texas DPS Permit – Form DL-84 Practice Exam

When driving down a steep grade, shifting to a lower gear is essential for maintaining control of the vehicle. This technique allows the engine to assist in slowing the vehicle down, relying on engine braking rather than solely the brakes. By using a lower gear, you reduce the risk of brake failure due to overheating, which can occur if the brakes are used excessively on long declines. This practice enhances vehicle stability and helps you manage speed more effectively without the constant application of the brake pedal.

In contrast, accelerating down the grade can lead to losing control, while using cruise control is not advisable because it can take your focus away from the necessary adjustments in speed and control that steep grades require. Minimizing brake usage is a good practice, but shifting to a lower gear is a more effective method for slowing the vehicle safely on steep declines.
